Ickworth House Continental Christmas: A Festive Celebration Like No Other

Nestled in the heart of the Suffolk countryside, Ickworth House, managed by the National Trust, transforms once again for Christmas, offering visitors a captivating glimpse into the life of the Earl-Bishop. Building on its debut last year, when the house was decorated to reflect historic Christmases past, this year’s event continues to revive the charm of the past with an enchanting continental twist.

Explore the Wonders of Europe

This winter, Ickworth House has decorated and themed areas on the Estate to bring alive the Earl-Bishop’s escapades across the continent as part of their ‘Christmas on the Continent’ event.

Guests will prepare to set sail from the Port of Dover, traveling to the atmospheric Ruins of Rome, where ancient history comes to life amidst the festive decor. Next, they will make their way to the snow-capped Swiss Alps, a breathtaking display that brings the beauty of alpine landscapes into the Suffolk countryside. The journey continues to a cosy Bavarian cabin, evoking the warmth and comfort of a traditional German Christmas. Finally, they will wander through the vibrant Venetian Carnival, a riot of colours and masks that attempts to captures the essence of this iconic Italian celebration.

Transforming Ickworth House for Christmas

The event at Ickworth House transforms the historic rotunda with an array of sizeable, high-quality theatrical set pieces, using the large spaces to full effect. Traditional Christmas trees and lanterns adorn table tops and corners, enhancing the festive atmosphere. Among the five displays, the Alps and Bavarian Cabin stand out, their beautiful lighting creating a festive ambience that wouldn’t feel out of place at grand events. These areas provide excellent photo opportunities for capturing memorable moments or taking the perfect selfie. Friendly volunteers, elegantly dressed in period costumes, are available at each display to provide further information if needed.

At the entrance, the ship installation is awe-inspiring. However, as visitors walk directly towards the bow, they might miss the details and sheer scale of this incredible display while receiving instructions from the greeters. This installation could benefit from more space and being viewed from a distance to genuinely appreciate the craftsmanship involved.

Ancient Rome, though beautifully lit and visually impressive, could benefit from a bit more atmosphere. Similarly, Venice didn’t quite capture the lively party spirit intended, and festive sprit, due to the quietness of the setting. However, the invitation to wear a mask in this section adds a nice touch, and it is fascinating to see the many in-house created masquerade masks by the Ickworth House team. The fun experience of walking onto the stage to try on props for a ‘performance’ is a highlight. In the future, it would be wonderful to see these areas come alive on selected dates with performances by cast members, enriching the narrative of the Earl’s travels.

While soundscapes have been introduced in some areas of the house, there’s an opportunity to expand these in the mentioned sections. The existing soundscapes are a welcome addition, immersing guests in the displays and enhancing the overall historical and magical journey across the continent.

Elsewhere on the Estate

On the estate, families can enjoy a charming trail that winds through the picturesque Albana woodland, bringing the festive themes of the house into the great outdoors. The entire family can participate with a special trail sheet, engaging in fun activities and spotting delightful sights along the way. UK-based artists Pickle Illustration have created a series of vibrant designs to enhance the experience, though larger versions would have made them even more impressive. The outdoor trail is open daily from 9am to 4pm. Activity sheets are available for purchase at £3 from the Welcome Point.

In addition, guests can experience a delightful family show in the West Wing Gallery, in association with KD Theatre Productions, on 6 – 8 December and 13 – 15 December.

In this interactive sing-along, Santa’s sleigh has broken down, and with the help of his helpers, he tries to get back on track in time for Christmas morning. Perfect for children aged 2 to 6, this festive treat is filled with music, laughter, and holiday cheer. Kids will even receive a gift from Santa at the end! Shows run on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, with a running time of approximately 45 minutes. Tickets cost £12 for children, £8 for adults, and under 2s go free!

From 19 December to 5 January, the West Wing Gallery will host self-led craft sessions for children during the Christmas school holidays. These activities, which align with the theme “Christmas on the Continent,” will allow youngsters to create their own paper boats and Venetian masks. No booking is required for this event. Suggested dontation £3.00.

Late night shopping will be available at Ickworth House on 6 – 8 December and 13 – 15 December from 4pm to 7.30pm. The West Wing gift shop and café will remain open late to provide a chance for pre-Christmas shopping. Visitors can browse seasonal treats, gifts for the whole family, homeware, and garden décor in the shop. The café will be offering festive drinks and delicious bakes and goodies.

Conclusion

Visiting Ickworth House this festive season offers an enjoyable day out for everyone. This event provides a unique way to experience this National Trust property, stepping away from the usual and presenting something fresh. While a few more ambient sounds and Christmas decor could enhance the atmosphere in some areas, the event is still thoroughly enjoyable and worth a visit. It would be lovely to see the main rooms opened next year, and a more traditional Christmas, but Ickworth House deserves praise for trying something different. We eagerly anticipate what next year will bring, hopefully expanding on their offering this year!

Overall, an enjoyable day out, complemented by delicious sandwiches, cakes, and scones from the Café!
